The Warmth That Changed Everything: How Rehan Went from Director to Partner — by Developing One Capability
Why did Rehan come to us?
Rehan was a Director at a well-known global consultancy. He had built every capability he needed to earn that title — and he had earned it fully. But Rehan wasn't someone who stopped at what he had already achieved.
He could see clearly what the next level required. The jump from Director to Partner demanded a different kind of presence — one that went beyond technical excellence and strategic thinking. He knew he needed to develop certain capabilities he didn't yet have. And he came to Defyn to build them.
What were some of the key shifts we did through his journey?
What Defyn uncovered went deeper than a skill gap.
Rehan had lost his father when he was very young. From that point on, he had carried a fierce belief that he had made it entirely on his own — no help, no support, just his own effort and will. That belief had been a source of tremendous strength. It had driven him to build a remarkable career from the ground up.
But it had also created a wall.
His perception of people and experiences — shaped by years of navigating life alone — was not allowing him to feel or project genuine warmth. And in a partnership role, warmth isn't a soft quality. It is the quality. It is what makes people want to follow you, trust you, bring you into their most important work.
We helped Rehan recognise something he had never fully seen: that he hadn't actually done it alone. When we worked with him at the neurological level, he began to recall — clearly and naturally — the moments where people had shown up for him. The help that had existed all along, but that his mind had filtered out.
As that perception shifted, something in him opened up. We helped him decompartmentalise — to stop seeing his personal and professional life as two separate worlds — and begin looking at his entire life in an integrated way. His mind was reprogrammed to interpret his experiences more resourcefully. And what emerged, naturally and without effort, was the ability to feel genuinely warm towards the people in his life.
What are some of the surprising experiences and measurable outcomes he got?
The results were both professional and deeply personal.
Rehan got the promotion. He is now a Partner.
But the way it happened said everything. His company has a peer rating system — juniors and seniors both rate each other on how much they enjoy working together and the kind of projects they want to collaborate on. Rehan received a 5/5 from almost everyone in his office. He had never received that kind of rating before. And he was thrilled.
Not because the number mattered — but because he knew what it meant. People felt his warmth. They wanted to be in his orbit. They trusted him.
One capability. One shift in how he saw his own story. And it changed the trajectory of his entire career.
